Quincunx
Quincunx (Inconjunct) in Astrology
A quincunx — also called an inconjunct — is an aspect of 150° between two planets. It connects zodiac signs that share no common element, modality, or polarity, making it one of astrology's most persistently uncomfortable aspects. The two planets involved simply have no natural common ground.
Why the Quincunx Is Awkward
Every other major aspect connects signs with at least some common ground:
- Conjunction (0°): Same sign — maximum common ground
- Sextile (60°): Compatible elements (Fire-Air, Earth-Water)
- Square (90°): Same modality — conflict with common drive style
- Trine (120°): Same element — natural flow
- Opposition (180°): Same modality, complementary elements
The quincunx is the odd one out — 150° separates signs that are 5 positions apart, sharing absolutely nothing. Aries (Fire, Cardinal) meets Virgo (Earth, Mutable): incompatible in every dimension. The result is persistent unease, misalignment, and the need for constant creative adjustment.
How the Quincunx Manifests
Unlike a square (which creates visible conflict) or an opposition (which creates polarization), the quincunx creates a low-grade, persistent sense of something not quite fitting. The two planets want things that are genuinely incompatible — and neither can simply dominate. The person must find creative workarounds.
Over time, quincunx aspects can produce remarkable integration skills — the person becomes adept at navigating between two very different energy systems — but it requires sustained effort and self-awareness.
Health and the Quincunx
Traditional astrology associated the quincunx with health adjustments — physical conditions requiring ongoing management rather than cure. In modern practice, this often manifests as chronic (but manageable) challenges in the domain of the involved planets.
The Yod
Two quincunxes converging on one apex planet create a Yod — the "Finger of God." The apex planet receives awkward adjusting pressure from two different directions simultaneously, creating a concentrated, fated quality around its themes.
