Opposition
Opposition Aspect in Astrology
An opposition occurs when two planets are exactly 180° apart in the zodiac (within an orb of ~8°). It represents polarity tension — two forces pulling in opposite directions — and the challenge of integrating seemingly contradictory needs into a conscious whole.
The opposition (☍) is the aspect of polarity — two planets in a cosmic tug-of-war across the chart. The opposed signs always share an axis: Aries/Libra, Taurus/Scorpio, Gemini/Sagittarius, etc.
The Integration Challenge
Unlike the square (which creates friction requiring action), the opposition creates awareness through contrast. You experience both poles — often projected: you live one side, attract people who embody the other. The goal is conscious integration.
Projection and the Opposition
Psychologically, oppositions are prone to projection. Someone with a Moon–Pluto opposition may deny their own intensity and attract intensely emotional partners. Owning both sides transforms the pattern.
Full Moon Births
People born under a Full Moon (Sun and Moon in opposition) often experience an inherent creative tension between identity and emotion that generates great expressiveness — writers, performers, and public figures are disproportionately born at the Full Moon.
Nodal Oppositions
The North Node is always exactly opposite the South Node — astrology's built-in opposition. Planets that conjunct one node automatically oppose the other, intensifying the karmic axis they touch.
