Square
Square Aspect in Astrology
A square occurs when two planets are approximately 90° apart in the zodiac (within an orb of ~8°). It is considered a tense, challenging aspect — planets in square work at cross-purposes, creating friction that drives growth, action, and achievement when channeled constructively.
The square (□) is the most action-forcing aspect in the natal chart. Unlike the trine (which flows) or the opposition (which confronts), the square generates friction that compels movement.
Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable Squares
Squares always connect planets in signs of the same modality:
- Cardinal squares (Aries/Cancer/Libra/Capricorn): tension around initiating action vs. competing priorities
- Fixed squares (Taurus/Leo/Scorpio/Aquarius): stubborn standoffs between competing values
- Mutable squares (Gemini/Virgo/Sagittarius/Pisces): anxiety from competing ideas and directions
The T-Square Configuration
A T-square — two planets in opposition with a third squaring both — is one of the most prevalent achievement signatures in charts of high-achieving individuals. The apex planet of a T-square channels the opposition tension and demands resolution.
Squares vs. Oppositions
Where an opposition invites integration through confrontation with the "other," a square demands internal action. The square's tension cannot be resolved by finding a partner who holds the opposite energy — it must be worked out from within.
Grand Cross
Four planets in mutual squares form a Grand Cross — one of the most demanding chart configurations, distributing tension across all four life areas it touches. It demands extraordinary versatility and often produces remarkable resilience.
