Semi-Square in Astrology

The semi-square is astrology's quiet irritant — a 45° angle between two planets that creates a persistent, low-grade friction without the dramatic confrontation of a square or opposition.

The Minor Hard Aspects

The semi-square sits exactly halfway between a conjunction (0°) and a square (90°) — it carries square-like energy at a reduced, background-noise volume.

How Semi-Squares Manifest

Unlike a square's dramatic confrontations, a semi-square produces:

• Recurring small irritations in the area of the planets involved
• Restless drive — a sense that something needs adjusting or improving
• Productive friction — not comfortable, but motivating
• Nagging themes that resurface periodically rather than as crisis

A Sun-Mars semi-square, for example, might produce an ongoing background tension between self-expression and drive — a subtle restlessness or competitive edge rather than outright conflict.

Reading Semi-Squares

Because semi-squares are minor aspects, astrologers apply tight orbs — typically 1° to 2° maximum. A loose semi-square is usually ignored. Only when the aspect is tight and involves significant chart points (Sun, Moon, Ascendant ruler, chart ruler) does it warrant significant attention.
