Soulwise

Mood Tracker vs Journal

Mood Tracker vs Journal

Both are useful. Both have failure modes. Soulwise is built on the failure modes.

What a mood tracker is

Open app → tap one of five faces → close app. Daylio, Moodpath, and similar do this well. The strength is the low friction. The weakness is the data: a 1-5 rating over six months tells you "you were a 3 a lot" without telling you why, when, or what comes next.

The other weakness is the rating drift problem. Most users settle on the middle of the scale within a month because the cognitive cost of distinguishing a 6 from a 7 is too high. A flat rating distribution looks like flat data.

What a journal is

Open Notion / Notes / Day One → write three paragraphs → close. The strength is depth: you have your own words back, in your own context. The weakness is sustainability: most journaling habits die in week three. Of the people who do sustain it, most stop noticing patterns because the entries are too dense to skim.

Where Soulwise sits

  • One chip from a curated set of 14 situations (not a 1-5 rating, not free-form mood).
  • One optional line (capped at 280 characters, not three paragraphs).
  • Cycle phase context quietly attached so the chip is read against follicular-phase or luteal-phase baseline.
  • One note back from the response-engine-four-factor.

The 20-second target is on purpose. Anything under 30 seconds tends to survive year two. Anything over fails.

What we do not do, that mood trackers do

  • A daily score.
  • A streak.
  • A "happiness graph" — that chart is hostile to the people who need it most.

What we do not do, that journals do

  • A blank page.
  • Push to write more.
  • Auto-summarisation of your entries (privacy: see period-privacy).

When you would use a real journal instead

If you are processing a single event over weeks — grief, a move, a decision — a journal is better. Soulwise reads the rhythm of weeks; a journal reads the depth of a single thread.
