If every event has a birth chart, electional astrology reasons that we can choose those births wisely. Rather than simply noting the planets at the time of an event, the electional astrologer works forward in time to find the moment most favourable for a specific undertaking.
It is astrology used as a tool of timing — not description, but prescription.
How Electional Astrology Works
The astrologer begins with:
- The type of event — wedding, surgery, business launch, legal filing, travel
- A date range — the window within which the event could occur
- The natal chart — ideally the chart of the person or entity initiating the event
Then they search within the date range for a moment where:
- The Moon is in a favourable sign for the activity type
- The Moon is not void of course (see void-of-course moon)
- The Ascendant and its ruler are appropriate for the undertaking
- The relevant house and its ruler are well-placed
- Benefics (Venus, Jupiter) are angular or supporting
- Malefics (Saturn, Mars) are in cadent houses or otherwise contained
