What is rectification in astrology?
Rectification is the process of determining or refining an unknown birth time using astrological methods. The astrologer works backward from significant life events — marriages, accidents, career peaks, losses — matching them to planetary transits, progressions, or solar arcs to identify the exact Ascendant degree that produces the most accurate timing correlations.
- Process of finding or correcting an unknown birth time
- Uses known life events matched to transits, progressions, or solar arcs
- Most critical factor being rectified is the Ascendant and house cusps
- A change of just 4 minutes shifts the Ascendant by approximately 1°
- Methods include primary directions, solar arcs, progressed lunations
Rectification in Astrology
Every natal chart begins with a birth time. But many people have uncertain, estimated, or entirely unknown birth times — recorded only as "morning" or "around noon," or lost entirely in incomplete records. Rectification is the astrological art of finding the true time.
Why Birth Time Is Critical
The Ascendant — and all house cusps — are extraordinarily time-sensitive. The entire zodiac rises once every 24 hours, meaning:
- 1° of Ascendant shift = approximately 4 minutes of time
- 1 sign change = approximately 2 hours of time
An error of even 15 minutes can place the Ascendant in the wrong sign, misplace planets across house boundaries, and make predictive timing tools unreliable.
The Rectification Process
- Gather life events with known dates — marriages, births of children, major moves, accidents, career changes, losses, awards
- Create candidate charts for the estimated time range
- Test each candidate against the life events using:
- Transits — was the relevant planet transiting an angular degree at the event?
- Progressions — did the progressed Moon or Sun change signs near the event?
- Solar arcs — did solar arc directions hit natal angles at the event?
- Identify the time where the most events align with the strongest astrological signatures
- Verify with future events or additional historical events
Methods Used in Rectification
| Method | Description |
|---|---|
| Primary Directions | Time-sensitive; 1° = 1 year of life (very precise) |
| Solar Arc Directions | All planets advance by progressed Sun's yearly arc |
| Secondary Progressions | Progressed Moon timing particularly useful |
| Transits to angles | Major planet transits over ASC/MC/IC/DSC |

Frequently Asked Questions
The Ascendant changes sign every 2 hours on average, and moves approximately 1° every 4 minutes. Without an accurate birth time, the Ascendant, house placements, and all time-sensitive predictive techniques (primary directions, solar arcs) cannot be reliably used.
A skilled astrologer with multiple significant life events can often narrow rectification to within a few minutes of the actual birth time. However, it remains an art requiring both technical skill and significant experience with predictive timing.
Without any birth time, astrologers typically work with a noon chart (treating the Sun's position as accurate but omitting the Ascendant and houses). Some rectification is still possible with enough life event data, but it is more speculative without any anchor.
