What are progressions in astrology?
Secondary progressions — the most common type — advance your natal chart symbolically by one day for each year of your life. The planets' positions on your 30th day after birth become your progressed chart for age 30. This technique reveals inner psychological development, major chapter transitions, and the slow evolution of your personality over time.
- One day after birth = one year of life (secondary progressions)
- Reveals inner psychological evolution, not external events
- Progressed Moon (fastest) changes sign every 2.5 years — marks emotional chapter shifts
Progressions in Astrology
Secondary progressions — the most widely used progressed technique — advance your natal chart symbolically: one day after birth equals one year of life. The planetary positions 30 days after your birth become your progressed chart at age 30. This creates a slowly evolving chart that tracks the inner psychological development of the person over their lifetime.
How to Read Progressions
Progressions are NOT the same as transits. Where transits describe external weather, progressions describe inner landscape evolution — the slow maturation of the psyche, shifting values, and changing life chapters.
The Progressed Moon
The progressed Moon moves approximately 1° per month and changes zodiac sign every 2.5 years. Each sign change marks a distinct emotional chapter — a period dominated by that sign's themes in terms of what you need, how you process feelings, and what environments nourish you.
The progressed Moon's house shows where your emotional focus currently lives.
Progressed New Moon and Full Moon
When the progressed Moon conjuncts the progressed Sun, a progressed New Moon occurs — marking the beginning of a new 30-year life chapter. This is often associated with major life reinvention: career changes, relationship reconfigurations, relocations.
The progressed Full Moon (progressed Moon opposite progressed Sun, about 15 years after the New Moon) marks the peak and culmination of the current chapter — achievements come to fruition, but themes begun at the New Moon often face their first major test.
Progressed Sun
The progressed Sun moves approximately 1° per year and changes zodiac sign approximately every 30 years. When the progressed Sun changes sign, the core personality undergoes a fundamental shift — a Capricorn progressed Sun moving into Aquarius shifts focus from structure and achievement toward community and innovation.
Progressed Ascendant
The progressed Ascendant advances at about 1° per year. A sign change in the progressed Ascendant (which may take decades) is associated with a marked shift in personality presentation, life approach, and even physical appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Transits use actual current planetary positions in the sky. Progressions use a symbolic time system where the chart advances one day per year of life — revealing internal psychological development rather than external events. Both are used together.
A progressed New Moon — when the progressed Moon conjuncts the progressed Sun — marks a major new 30-year chapter in life. It signals a fresh start, often accompanied by significant life changes in identity and direction.
Progressed aspects involving slow planets (Saturn, Jupiter) can last years. The most dynamic progressions are those involving the progressed Moon (which moves fastest — about 1° per month), lasting weeks to months.
The progressed Ascendant advances slowly (about 1° per year), eventually changing sign over decades. When the progressed Ascendant changes sign, the entire outer personality and life approach shifts — often felt as a significant identity evolution.
