Nodal Axis
Nodal Axis in Astrology
The nodal axis is astrology's karmic spine — the line connecting the North Node (☊) and South Node (☋), always directly opposite each other in the natal chart.
These are not planets or even physical objects. They are mathematical intersection points where the Moon's slightly tilted orbital path crosses the Sun's apparent path (the ecliptic). Where they meet the chart, they describe the soul's journey.
The Astronomical Basis
The Moon's orbit is tilted approximately 5° to the ecliptic. It crosses the ecliptic plane twice per orbit:
| Node | Direction | Name |
|---|---|---|
| North Node (☊) | Moon crossing ecliptic northward | Dragon's Head / Rahu |
| South Node (☋) | Moon crossing ecliptic southward | Dragon's Tail / Ketu |
Because they are defined by the Moon's relationship to the Sun's path, the nodes are always exactly 180° apart — opposite each other in the chart.
The Karmic Meaning
| Node | Traditional Meaning |
|---|---|
| South Node | Past-life patterns, inherited gifts and burdens, comfort zone, over-familiar territory |
| North Node | Soul's evolutionary direction, unfamiliar but calling, growth that requires effort |
The nodal journey is from South to North — from what you know too well toward what you are becoming.
The Nodes and Eclipses
Eclipses occur only when the Sun and Moon are both near the nodal axis — within approximately 15° (solar eclipse) or 12° (lunar eclipse). This astronomical requirement means eclipse seasons always correspond to the zodiac signs currently occupied by the nodes.
Nodal Returns and Reversals
The nodes complete one full backward cycle through the zodiac in approximately 18.6 years. Notable nodal milestones:
- Nodal return (~18.6 years): Nodes return to their natal positions — major karmic review
- Nodal reversal (~9.3 years): Nodes arrive in opposite signs — tension between past and future
In Synastry
Nodal contacts in synastry are among the most karmic. When one person's Sun, Moon, or personal planet conjuncts the other's North or South Node, the relationship carries a strong sense of fate — recognition, unfinished business, or soul-level purpose.
