Dignity in Astrology

Essential dignity describes how comfortable, strong, or challenged a planet is based solely on the zodiac sign it occupies. The concept comes from traditional astrology and provides a nuanced assessment of planetary strength that goes beyond simple sign placement.

The Five Classical Dignities

Traditional astrology recognizes five levels of essential dignity, each granting a different degree of planetary strength:

1. Domicile (strongest): The planet is in its own sign — like a king in his castle
2. Exaltation (very strong): The planet is in its honored sign — an honored guest
3. Triplicity: The planet rules one of the three signs of a given element based on day/night birth
4. Term (Bounds): Each sign is divided into five unequal sections, each ruled by a different planet
5. Face (Decan): Each sign is divided into three 10° sections, each with a planetary ruler

The Two Debilities

Detriment: The sign directly opposite the planet's domicile sign. Mars in Libra (opposite Aries), Saturn in Cancer (opposite Capricorn). The planet's natural qualities find difficult, awkward expression.

Fall: The sign directly opposite the planet's exaltation sign. Sun in Libra (opposite Aries exaltation), Moon in Scorpio (opposite Taurus exaltation). Even more friction than detriment.

Debility is Not Doom

A debilitated planet is not destined for failure — it faces friction in expressing its natural qualities. This friction often produces:

• Greater effort and compensatory strengths
• Unique, unconventional expressions of the planet's themes
• Eventual mastery through persistent challenge

Many accomplished people have key planets in debility.

Accidental Dignity

Essential dignity (sign) is distinct from accidental dignity (circumstantial strength). A planet in the 1st or 10th house is accidentally strong regardless of sign. A retrograde planet has reduced accidental dignity. Both types of dignity combine to give the full picture.
