Cardinal Modality in Astrology

Cardinal is one of three modalities (or qualities) in astrology, shared by Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn. Cardinal signs are initiators — they begin new seasons, launch new projects, and lead. Cardinal energy is action-oriented, ambitious, and driven by the impulse to start.

Cardinal signs open the four seasons of the year — they are the cosmic starters. Cardinal energy says: 'Let's begin.' The Cardinal cross (Aries–Cancer–Libra–Capricorn) covers all four life quadrants: self, home, relationships, and career.
