Jargon-Free Astrology

A common failure mode in astrology software: the chart is technically correct and the language is impenetrable. "Mars in detriment squaring transit Saturn" is precise; it also closes the door on anyone who is not three years into the field. Soulwise's rule is that the calculation can be as technical as it needs to be; the writing must not be.

What we keep

  • Real natal chart calculation, sidereal or tropical depending on your locale's convention.
  • Aspect math — conjunctions, squares, trines.
  • House placements.
  • Transit detection.

What we strip from user-facing copy

  • Latin (rulership, dignity, detriment, exaltation, fall)
  • Decans
  • Antiscia and other technical reflections
  • Arabic parts beyond Fortune
  • Most asteroid talk (Chiron stays as a plain "wound/healing" frame)
  • Sect language (diurnal/nocturnal in copy)

How a transit becomes a sentence

A technical read like "Transit Mars conjunct natal Mercury, 0°12' applying, 1-day exact" becomes, in user copy:

"Today the way you speak has more heat than usual. Use it; don't waste it."

The first version is what the engine sees. The second version is what you read. The translation layer is non-trivial — it is the whole point of the response-engine-four-factor.

Why this is hard to do well

Because most astrology writing leans on jargon to feel authoritative. Without the jargon, the writer has to actually say something true in plain language, which is a higher bar. Soulwise's editorial process treats jargon as a debt to be paid down per-sentence.

Where the deeper read lives

For readers who want the technical view, the Personality Blueprint app surfaces it on demand — full natal placements, aspect grids, transit ephemerides. The web glossary entries for individual placements (Sun, Moon, Venus, etc.) are also plain-language. The technical view is the opt-in, not the default.

Paired with cycle work

Soulwise pairs astrology with cycle awareness, but it never makes cycle claims through an astrology frame — see non-medical-cycle-tracking for that boundary. Astrology gives the day's flavour; the cycle gives the body's baseline; the response engine writes the note that pairs them.
