Intercepted Signs

Intercepted Signs in Astrology

In a standard natal chart using Placidus or similar quadrant house systems, each house cusp is occupied by a zodiac sign. But in some charts, a sign disappears from the cusps entirely — swallowed whole by a wider house. These are intercepted signs.

Why Interceptions Occur

Houses near the Ascendant and Descendant (1st and 7th cusps) tend to be narrower, while houses at the MC/IC axis can be extremely wide — especially for births at high latitudes. When a house is wider than 30°, it can contain an entire zodiac sign that never touches a cusp.

Interceptions always come in pairs. If Gemini is intercepted in the 1st house, Sagittarius is intercepted in the 7th house simultaneously.

The Duplicated Sign Trade-Off

Every pair of intercepted signs produces a pair of duplicated (repeated) signs — signs that appear on two house cusps in a row. These represent areas of automatic, repetitive expression — the chart's comfort zones that can feel compulsive.

Reading Intercepted Signs and Planets

FactorMeaning
Intercepted signEnergy expressed inwardly, latently, or after conscious work
Intercepted planetPlanet functions below the surface; must be deliberately activated
Duplicated signAutomatic expression; familiar territory; potential rigidity

Many astrologers describe intercepted planets as representing talents the native knows they have but struggles to express naturally — gifts that emerge after significant inner development or life experience.

House Systems Without Interceptions

Whole Sign houses assign one house per sign, eliminating interceptions entirely. If interceptions feel significant in your chart, comparing Placidus and Whole Sign readings can be illuminating.
